The $10 Tuk Tuk To Go Project

The orange robe of the Buddhist monk stood out brilliantly against the vast grey walls of the Cambodian Temple - Angkor Wat. Our first sight of Koun Sen was of the back of his robe framed in a tall window-like opening. We wandered inside the temple to catch a glimpse of this delightful vision. Seeing us, he moved his hands to greet us traditionally – palms pressed together, close to his heart, soft bow.

Though Koun Sen’s English was limited, we learned that he came from a small town in Cambodia. Unlike his six brothers and three sisters who have followed the family tradition of farming - a very poor life, Koun Sen became a monk in order to obtain an education. At the age of seventeen, Koun Sen took his vows.

When we met Koun Sen he was 21. Along with his studies in the Dharma and meditation, he was learning English. It was his pursuit of English that explained his presence that day at Angkor Wat. Talking with tourists was his way to hone his skills and put his lessons into practice

Koun Sen’s smile, soft presence, and sincerity immediately engaged us. Sarala and I talked with Koun Sen for about half an hour. He asked for our email address and we gladly gave it to him.

Since returning home, I have continued to correspond with Koun Sen. He is always appreciative when I reply with corrections to his English (as if my English is perfect). At times I have sent him some money. His gratitude is abundant.

Last year, Koun Sen, in his typically humble manner, mentioned that he would like to expand his horizons and buy a Tuk Tuk. This would allow him the unique opportunity to become self sufficient and to create a life for himself other than as a monk.

One day I had a brain-flash about how to assist Koun Sen to realize his dream. And so began the $10 Tuk Tuk To Go Project. The cost of a Tuk Tuk is $2200. It seems like a really good idea to also provide Koun Sen with the first year of expenses such as gas and repairs. This way he could really establish himself. So I’ve projected collecting $3,000. In our culture, it is pretty effortless for almost everyone to let go of $10. The math is easy: $10 X 300 = $3,000. Presto!

So, please consider donating $10. Also, please forward this email to friends whom you think would enjoy contributing. I will write an occasional email to all contributors who would like to be kept up to date with the project. Please if you would like to receive these updates. Once Koun Sen has the Tuk Tuk I will continue to share with contributors how he is doing – at least until he is safely on his way.

To donate by cheque please email me at and I will get in touch with you; or click on the "Donate" button to pay by credit card with PayPal.

(This is not a registered charity so tax receipts cannot be issued.)

Thank you! And I know that I can extend Koun Sen’s gratitude along with mine and Sarala’s.

Jeffrey (and Sarala too)
